We have designed the bungalow for Accessibility Standard, Category 1 (i.e. suitable for a wheelchair user travelling alone) and this grading has been awarded by the Scottish Tourist Board.
There are no steps anywhere.
You can park within three meters of the front door. For 120cms of the three meters, there is a ramp of 1:12, with a handrail. The surface of the car park is asphalt and the ramp is concrete. The width of the ramp is 145cms.

Width of doors:
the front door is 80cms. clear.
internal doors are 75cms. clear.
The front door has a lip of 12mm. (half an inch).
All door handles, light switches and the shower-controls are set at a maximum height of 120cms.
The principal windows can be opened and closed from a seated position.
The shelf for the pay-phone has an underspace of 65cms. from floor level.

Bedroom: for wheelchair users, the bungalow has an en suite bedroom, with a Zip-and-Link bed: this king-size (5ft.) bed separates into two single beds, each of 2ft.6ins. (Please note that the other en suite bedroom, with twin beds, is not suitable for a wheelchair.) The bedroom has a clear turning-circle of two meters. The built-in wardrobe has a hanging rail of adjustable height: it can be set low at 140cms. The height of the bed is 55cms.

Bathroom: the en suite bathroom has a clear turning-circle of 160cms and has spaces one meter wide beside the WC and beside the shower-seat for lateral transfer.

The shower, in a corner of the bathroom, is step-free. You have two choices: (1) The shower has a sturdy lift-up seat (max. weight: 20 stones) fixed to the wall. It is larger than most seats of this type and measures 46cms. wide x 33cms. deep; it is set at a height of 48cms. Lateral transfer is right to left and on the left-hand wall a horizontal grab-rail is set at a height of 25cms. above the seat and 50cms. from the centre of the seat. (2) The bungalow has a self-propelled wheel-in shower/toilet chair (max. weight: 20 stones). The chair has adjustable and detachable arm-rests and foot-plates. The padded seat is horseshoe-shaped.

The wash-basin is wall-mounted, i.e. without a pedestal. It has an under-space of 70cms. clear. All taps in the bungalow are lever taps.

The WC: lateral transfer is from left to right and on the right-hand wall a horizontal grab-rail is set at a height of 30cms. above the seat and 50cms. from the centre of the WC. The front of the WC pan is 73cms. from the wall behind it. The rim of the seat is 48cms. from the floor. To the left of the WC (i.e. on the left side when sitting there!) a folding support-arm is fixed to the wall, 16cms. from the left side of the WC. This support-arm can be either in a horizontal position or can be folded up against the wall, so as not to get in the way of a wheelchair user.

A monkey-pole is available on request.

Outdoors, a pathway of concrete pavers (120cms. wide) takes you to your private patio, a sun-trap with a panoramic view.

ACCESSIBLE SKYE: in the bungalow you will find detailed information about restaurants that are wheelchair accessible, as well as a wide choice of shops, museums, points of interest and tourist attractions that can be enjoyed by a wheelchair user.

If, because of disability, you qualify for a free Road Fund Licence, you will be exempt from paying the toll to cross the new Skye Bridge. (Orange badge holders have to pay, alas!) If you would like to enjoy a ferry trip, Caledonian MacBrayne (Calmac) ferries give to those who have a free Road Fund Licence a generous 50% off their charge for the car, or 10% for orange-badge holders. On the larger ferries they are very helpful and, on request, can arrange for your car to board first or last, so that you can be close to the lift from the car deck to the other decks.
